Those witnesses, longtime Trump Organization employees Jeffrey McConney and Deborah Tarassoff, handled the checks, invoices, and other records that comprise the 34 business records the Manhattan district attorney's office alleges Trump illegally falsified. He was sentenced to five months in jail in 2022 for a Trump Organization felony payroll tax-fraud prosecution, and is now serving another five-month sentence for felony perjury in last year's Trump Organization civil fraud trial. The Trump Organization needed to reimburse Cohen for some money, McConney testified that Weissberg told him. Yet another Trump Organization employee would FedEx the checks to Trump in DC, he testified. In the afternoon, prosecutor Christopher Conroy slogged through more records with Tarasoff, who said she has worked at the Trump Organization for 24 years.

Trump only spoke three times during Monday’s session, acknowledging to the judge he understood his rights as a criminal defendant. Throughout the day Trump often engaged with his attorneys, whispering to them and sharing notes as they debated motions with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Trump looked toward Merchan as the judge addressed the prospective jurors to explain the case and their instructions as potential jurors. Entering and exiting the courtroom, Trump had to walk right past Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought this case against Trump and was seated in the fourth row behind his prosecutors. Trump will be back at the defendant’s table on Tuesday, when Merchan will continue questioning the prospective jurors who could ultimately decide whether to convict Trump in the first criminal trial of a former president.

Compared with Millennials, especially, who entered the workforce in the Dark Ages known as the Great Recession, the Gen Z experience is a dream. But Gen Z isn’t having an easy go of it either. Gen Z hasn’t had a chance to get a foot in the door. “Many Gen Zers also indicated their first step in managing behavioral-health challenges was going to TikTok or Reddit for advice,” the report said. It’s hard to blame them: Many in Gen Z had their formative school years blown up by a global pandemic.

The longer it takes for Cannon to decide these issues, the more likely a trial would need to wait until after the November presidential election. But Cannon’s critics view the pace of the Trump prosecution with added suspicion because of how she handled a separate, 2022 lawsuit Trump brought attacking the FBI’s documents investigation. In that lawsuit, Cannon granted an extraordinary Trump request for a third-party review of the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago resort for the classified documents. Now, critics accuse Cannon of – purposely or not – playing into Trump’s strategy of delaying the trial until after the election. Hours after the hearing, Cannon rejected Trump’s first claim, that the national defense law he is charged under was too vague.

New York CNN —It took Donald Trump less than 24 hours to test the boundaries of Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order in his New York criminal trial. Inside the courtroom, Trump has been admonished and threatened with removal for being disruptive. Outside the courtroom, Trump has repeatedly railed against the charges he faces in front of cameras and attacked all of those involved on social media. Engoron issued a gag order on commentary about court staff that covered his clerk, fining Trump twice for breaking it. In the federal classified documents case, Trump has appeared several times before Judge Aileen Cannon, whom he appointed.

“This experimental graphic will help better convey wind hazard risk inland in addition to coastal wind hazards,” the center said in the post. Heavy rains and strong winds can be deadly and cause significant damage inland, which happened in 2022 with Hurricane Ian, when 149 people died in Florida. The goal of the expanded forecast cone is to make sure people who don't live along a coast are aware of the dangers they could still face, said Jamie Rhome, deputy director of the hurricane center. Ian produced between 10 and 20 inches (51 centimeters) of rain across much of central Florida, the hurricane center reported. Only Hurricane Idalia struck the U.S., coming ashore in the lightly-populated Big Bend region of Florida's Gulf Coast but also causing significant inland flooding.

As Hurricane Lee churned closer to coastal New England on Friday, with winds expected to intensify by nightfall, cruise ships sought refuge in Portland, Maine, and homeowners in Provincetown, Mass., piled sandbags. An arborist in Halifax, Nova Scotia, fielded dozens of calls from residents expecting tree damage. Yet, like others in a region accustomed to powerful nor’easters, if not hurricanes, Mr. Crobar was not particularly fazed by what was coming. “We like to sensationalize the weather, but it’s just a natural part of the earth,” he said. The storm was expected to make landfall in the Canadian province of New Brunswick late on Saturday, but forecasters said its sprawling size meant that severe effects would be felt in New England, too.

While the idea of using the 14th Amendment to keep Trump out of the White House has been bandied about by lawyers and political figures, the Colorado action is the first lawsuit demanding that a state disqualify Trump from the ballot, CREW said. The group chose Colorado because the laws there make it easier to get it before a court, he says. Some members of Congress, most recently Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, have suggested the 14th Amendment might apply to Trump. Critics of the movement to disqualify Trump say the 14th Amendment clause was written to apply to former Confederates and should not be used against contemporary would-be candidates. Still, those who want to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump face significant legal hurdles, experts say, adding that the matter is likely to end up in the Supreme Court if the movement gains steam.

For Mr. DeSantis, the flights illustrate the broader bet he has made that the animating energy in the Republican Party today has shifted from conservatism to confrontationalism. Mr. DeSantis has used this playbook before. He ordered up flights from the Texas border last year to the symbolically liberal hamlet of Martha’s Vineyard, a stunt that drew exactly the outrage he sought. Those flights are now a staple of his stump speech, usually to cheers from the crowd. His allies in the Florida Legislature earmarked $12 million of taxpayer money into the state budget this year for just this purpose.

Suriyapong Thongsawang | Moment | Getty ImagesHow long economic recessions lastIn 2021, the committee confirmed that the pandemic downturn lasted just two months, from February 2020 to April 2020, "which makes it the shortest U.S. recession on record." That economic bust was cut short by massive stimulus from the government. Federal Reserve economists are predicting that there will be a mild recession later this year, "with a recovery over the subsequent two years," according to the minutes of the Fed's March 21-22 meeting. Indeed, the longest recession in recent decades was the 2008 financial crisis, which slogged on for 18 months. Cutting rates usually helps the economy rebound from downturns.
Cory Kennedy was the internet's first "It" girl as a teenager in the early aughts. "I want to garden, like a freaking hipster Martha Stewart," Kennedy told New York Magazine. It's a reminder of her time as "the internet's first 'It' girl," as New York Magazine dubbed her in a recent profile. In her recent article in The Atlantic, Twenge said millennials have experienced "a breathtaking financial comeback" since the mid-2010s. Even Martha Stewart jumped on the teenage-dirtbag train — though she could take some notes from Kennedy on the sleaze.
